German carmaker Audi AG said Wednesday it already beat its 2008 record for car sales in China and that it expects to sell over 130,000 cars there this year. Audi, based in Ingolstadt, is a division of Europe's biggest automotive group, Volkswagen AG.
It said it delivered 118,196 cars in China, year-to-date, a 22 percent increase over 2008 levels. The company, which has a production facility in Changchun, said its A4 model's sales increased more than 62 percent while the A6 model's sales increased more than 16 percent. "The record surpassed our expectations," Peter Schwarzbauer, Audi's chief of sales and marketing said in a statement. "By year's end, we'll clearly sell more than 130,000 cars in China," he said.

Premier Automobiles has launched the Zotye Rio SUV and it comes with the Peugeot TUD5 Diesel Unit that also powered the 309 in India a decade ago. Zoyte is a Chinese Manufacturer of cars and this vehicle is essentially a decade old Daihatsu Terios which was probably given away by them to the Chinese. They had put up a stall at the New Delhi Motor Show 2 years ago and were scouting for an indian partner which is mandatory for any foreign company to start operations in India. Well the engine is now turbo charged but not comparable to the modern diesels in terms of refinement or torque but since the SUV comes in the small car size limit defined by the Indian government, we can expect an attractive price of around 5 lacs. Okay here is an update, we called DSA Premier which is the only Pune dealer listed on their website. It is in Sangvi and I have only seen three wheelers around that place. I wonder how an urban end user will buy a car from a 3 wheeler dealer. They ought to come up with some seperate dealerships dedicated to this joint venture or they are not selling. The DSA fellow told us the car will be for display in a day or two and did not ask for our phone number for getting back to us when it is available. Rick dealer eh.. Here is the link of dealer details across India.

Renault has made it's issues with M&M almost public. This news has been doing the rounds for a while now. According to reports, the alliance will probably not last long but their is another side to it. Renault says, they are here for good. They have 3 different alliances in India all for different types of products. These were made when Carlos Ghosn was here about 2 years ago. The Renault Mahindra Alliance was the first which decided to make Logan. The second was with Bajaj to make the ULC car which was supposed to be pitched against the Nano. Nano is already chugging around towns and this project is still on paper. The third is for the commercial vehicles with Ashok Leyland. The Logan did not pick up in the Indian market possibly because of its pricing. Wherever it has been launched in the world, it has been the cheapest sedan for those markets. This was not the case in India where the Tata Indigo was already establised at that price point. Logan sales eventually dropped to about 500 cars in September of 2009 and it was about 1700 units a year ago. Their were also issues like M&M failing to stress on the sales of the Logan, promoting it a lot less than it does for it's SUV's. Anand Mahindra had said that he want's Mahindra primarily to be an SUV brand. I wonder what made him go for an alliance with Renault. The final word is that the Sandero will come. Yes the Sandero is the hatchback from Renault and it shares a lot of compnents with Logan and of course it is a more modern looking car and will fit in perfectly in the premium hatch category in India. But just launching the Sandero will not be enough. A manufacturer needs at least 3 small cars in the market today. Sandero might not be manufactred with Mahindra. This is the news coming in. Such negative publicity will impact Renault more than it will to M&M who are busy churning out Boleros as we speak. Let us see what the future holds but Sandero is one hell of a car. It shares its platform with the Logan which is good news and excellent european build quality is a given. More news reports here in the Forum.

Hyundai India has gone to the High Court complaining that Renault's new car's name Sandero sounds strikingly similar to its bread and butter model Santro. Well I have been hearing about the Sandero for a while now and it never sounded like the Santro to me. This is news and they claim that Renault is trying to build on the brand value created by the decade long seller Santro. It is hillarious but there is one good thing about this otherwise boring news - Sandero is really coming. No matter what they name it, Renault is finally going to sell it here. Another B+ hatch coming our way. Let the good times roll...
