SAIC In GM India? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Abhinav Sharma

Now this news is getting hotter than ever. Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) is buying a stake in GM India. This means a lot. SAIC is a Chinese car gaint and has got manufacturing co-operation with GM and VW in China which are the two largest companies there in terms of sales. SAIC partnered with General Motors to form Shanghai GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, and the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center. SAIC also partnered with Volkswagen Group in the formation of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive. SAIC also acquired the Biritsh car maker MG Rover in 2007 and releases an upgraded Rover 750 called the Roewe.

GM sells the Spark already in China and the Beat too will sell there soon. GMI could very well source components from Chhinese suppliers at competitive prices and also it has been speculated that the Wuling range of LCV's could also make it to India. The intent of GM India could hardly have been doubted with the strong range of small cars it is going to put in the market in 2010. With this merger, there are numerous possibilities and we could only wait and watch the action. SAIC makes all the VW's and Skoda's in China. It also makes Daewoo's, Opels and numerous Buicks there in addition to the Roewe sedan. Do your math. Here is the link.. http://www.saicgroup.com/English/

Cruze US Launch Delayed Again PDF Print E-mail
Written by Abhinav Sharma
Thursday, 29 October 2009 19:29

Chevrolet Cruze which was to launch in USA in April next year to compete with the small car best sellers there, Civic and Corolla has been postponed. It will now start selling in June next year. GM spokesman Klaus-Peter Martin said the move is "to ensure a flawless launch" and make sure the Cruze debuts with an array of available options, including a variety of fuel-efficient engines.

Cruze is a significant launch for GM USA which has been trying to make a mark in small cars and this will be a chance for them to showcase what powertrain they have lined up. GM has been seen as uncompetitive in small cars. Currently, Chevrolet sells the diminutive Cobalt, which will be phased out once the Cruze hits the market. Incidentally, Cruze is already launched in India and is selling well. GM India is looking a stabilizing at about 600 unites a month for this car whcih is the quickest of the lot this side of the German 3. The excellent diesel whcih is the primary engine this side of the world probably will not make it there. 325Nm of torque is good even with American standards for a car of this size but they don't like diesels. GM plans to build the U.S. version of the Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio. The model also will be sold in several markets outside North America.

Hyundai India Domestic Sales Surge PDF Print E-mail
Written by Abhinav Sharma

The domestic sales are 41% up YOY, exports are down because the EU nations Cash for Clunkers scheme is over, which is what was promoting the sales of small cars by Hyundai and Suzuki. The primary export vehicles are the i10, i20 and the Santro. Maruti exports could also be down since the A-Star also known as the Alto in EU is the primary car to be exported though it has not really done well in terms of domestic sales because of the cramped interiors. Indians need practicality since this could be the only car they would drive where as in EUm, these cars are second or third cars primarily used as city run abouts.

---- Up by healthy 41.4%--
--- Cumulative grows 11%--

Commenting on October, 2009 sales Arvind Saxena, Sr. Vice President - Marketing and Sales, HMIL said, “The festive period of the last two months generated strong sales and has given the Indian automobile industry some respite from the sluggish performance of the last few months and now it looks that this period of strong sales would propel the industry in to a positive double digit growth for the remainder of the year. This might be the turning point the Indian automotive industry has been waiting for”. The segment-wise cumulative sales in the month of October, 2009 are as follows: A2 Segment (Santro, i10, Getz & i20) 47,407 units; A3 Segment (Accent & Verna) 4,285 units; A5 Segment (Sonata Transform) 44 units; and SUV Segment (Tucson) 0 unit.

Reports are in that Hyundai is developing an 800cc small car specifically for the Indian market and will take on the Nano, Spark, Alto head on. The car is going to be powered by an 800cc engine and will overall be placed below the Santro. The availibility could be as early as end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. The car will have a five speed gearbox and considering the time of launch, all safety equipment can be expected. This will be a new car from ground up and willnot share much with the existing line up of Santro and i10. Expect an on-road price of 2.5 lacs. We will put the details when we know more. I am sure we will be able to see the test mules running around the country, specially near Chennai in the coming months. Keep your eyes open and if anyone sees anything, please post it on the forum for others.

India is poised to be the global small car manufacturing base in the next decade and this release by Hyundai could take the fight straight to Maruti's backyard. Hyundai has strong service and customer base and could very well be a close competitor to Maruti.
