Monsoon Driving Tips PDF Print

Here are a few things you should do to drive safe before the Monsoon hits your town.

1. Wipers: Wipers need to be changed almost every year. They are made of rubber which hardens eventually in sunlight. Hard rubber is not good to wipe your windshield clean and will always leaves lines as it rubs across. This can prove dangerous in the night since you tend to focus on those distracting lines more than the road. A set of wipers would not cost more than Rs. 300 for any small and mid size car and can be bought from any automobile components shop. They can be removed and fixed by you at home, it is just a 'clip on' for most cars so no mechanic intervention is required. This is the most important factor for good visibility in rains.

Still, if you are stuck with inferior wipers and it is pouring heavily, buy a cigarette and empty the tobacco on the windhsield, outside of course. Rub it all over the glass and you will see some improvement in the cleaning capability of the old wipers. It is not much but it will bail you out of the situation safely.

2. Good Headlights: Invest in powerful headlights. These can take a significant amount of stress away from your daily commute. Upgrade the lights if they are not powerful enough. Check the head lamp glass for opacity which may result with age and sunlight, hampering the passing light beam. And of course, keep the headlights clean before you set out in the rain.

3. Battery: Have an excellent battery in your car before the roads turn into swimming pools. In India, this is a must since the roads are virtually pools of diseased water from all around specially if it rains for a few days in a row. This means you will be wading your car through knee deep water very often. Now if your car gets stuck in such a scenario and is taking time to start again after you have dragged it out, you will need more than a few cranks of the self-starter to fire it up. If you have a weak battery, pushing the car is your best bet to start it. But a new battery will crank as many times as it can, much more than your car will need to fire up. Just my experience. Batteries have recently become expensive, a regular small car battery will set you back by about Rs. 3500. Dont forget to take a few hundred bucks back in exchange of your old battery.

4. Air Conditioning: You need the A/C to keep the windshield clear from inside the car because excessive humidity in the cabin can limit the visibility. It is virtually impossible to take a cloth and start wiping it from inside everytime and while you drive. It was easy for the previous generation when our fathers did it in the Premier Padmini and the Amby whenever it rained. They had a dedicated cloth for this. A/C to the rescue. If you have one in your car, don't be dumb to wait for the rains to get over to refill the gas. You will need it as much as you wanted it in summers, trust me.

5. Lights: Check all the lights, also the tail lights which are important than most of us think they are.

6. Road Markings: If the roads around you have those orange shiny reflective markings, following them is your best choice to avoid running into an obstacle. I have seen many vehicles going on the divider in the night just because they could not see the road.

7. Slow: Drive slow. Almost all the cars in India lack safety features like ABS and traction control. On slippery roads, tires often lock up on hard and sudden braking without reducing the speed of car in any way. This is extremely dangerous and the car is virtually out of the drivers control in such a situation. Be careful. Avoid the need to slam the brakes.

8. Pot Holes: Have you often noticed that the small pot hole on which your car glided throughout the past year has bloated 5 times it size in just 3 days of rain. Well it happens. So be careful in rains even if you know the road like the back of your hand. Things change in rains. The smallest of disturbances on the road get magnified during this season and can be permanently damaging your cars suspension, rigidity and build. Take care of the car on such surfaces and enjoy driving it longer than you think you could have. Really, it makes a difference on the life of your car.
